Coating Technology Creates Controlled-release Fertilizer Manufacturing Advantages, Sustainability Improvements, and Performance Benefits

SYLACAUGA, Ala., USA, November 23, 2021 – Pursell Agri-Tech, LLC and Huntsman International, LLC announce the issuance of U.S. Patent No. 11,180,429 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This patent relates to the innovative PurActive® polyurethane-based coating technology used in the production of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) for a broad range of markets including turf and ornamental, specialty agriculture, row crop agriculture, and consumer home and garden.

Production of controlled-release fertilizer with PurActive® coating technology employs several technological advancements to improve manufacturing efficiency and optimize productivity while reducing impact on the environment.

“The PurActive® coating technology leverages Huntsman’s advanced RIMLINE® polyurethane system and optimized processes to produce controlled-release fertilizer at faster batch times, lower processing temperatures and with a much thinner coating weight,” said Jan Buberl, Vice President – Huntsman Polyurethanes Americas. “These unique advantages translate into lower energy usage and a reduced carbon footprint.”

University trials conducted on behalf of Pursell Agri-Tech demonstrated that the PurActive® technology also protected the core fertilizer substrate and minimized nutrient loss, greatly reducing volatilization and leaching.

“We are committed to introducing CRF technology that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality,” said Taylor Pursell, Chairman, Pursell Agri-Tech. “This patented coating technology has proven its ability to do this while allowing us to offer customers a broader portfolio of coated substrates and numerous product features previously unavailable.”

The PurActive® coating technology is thinner and allows for higher nutrient content per ton.  The lower processing temperature promotes the survivability of such health-boosting additives as micronutrients, microbials, and biostimulants.

This patent issuance comes on the heels of Pursell Agri-Tech and Huntsman being recognized by the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) as the 2021 recipient of its prestigious Polyurethane Innovation Award, which recognizes companies and individuals whose visions and perseverance bring new innovative, life-enhancing products, technologies, and initiatives to the marketplace.

“Ongoing investment in research and development is the backbone of our company and what we believe differentiates us, and our partner Huntsman, from the competition,” said Nick Adamchak, Pursell Agri-Tech CEO. “This patent further solidifies our position and enhances our ability to introduce CRF technology that improves nutrient delivery while minimizing impact to the environment.”
